Adult Children and Their Parents Family Workshop – Davis, CA

A WORKSHOP FOR ADULT CHILDREN and THEIR PARENTS

Shift the Old to Fit the New

This program is designed to facilitate new conversations and strengthen family bonds.

Adult children and their parents remain as a family for more decades than ever before. Roles between aging parents and their adult children keep changing, and with these shifts, insecurity triggers and moments of distress are inevitable.

We often don’t know how to be with each other. Just to name two of a myriad of questions we face: How do parents feel becoming grandparents as they watch their babies have babies of their own and what will their roles be? How do adult children find a way to fly on their own, explore independently creating their own values but still feel they can turn toward their parents for the emotional refuge of a secure base and safe haven when needed: a need that follows all humans ‘from the cradle to the grave’? After adolescence, adult children go through stages of emerging adulthood into full adulthood and parents as they move toward old age become more reliant on their adult children. These are tricky developmental processes.

Yet no matter how much suffering can occur, families continue to wish for better connections. Regardless of age, parents want to heal ruptures if they knew how and adult children still long to be seen and understood. But how? This educational enrichment program is meant to address these questions. We will use the highly successful Hold Me Tight® for couples as a model and adapt it to the adult family work.

Drs. Nancy and Paul Aikin, clinical psychologists, Certified EFT Trainers and Co-Directors of the Greater Sacrament-Davis EFT Center will teach Dr. Sue Johnson’s empirically validated concepts of love from Emotionally Focused Therapy ( EFT) -- modified to fit the attachment systems present in family life. With the help of theory, exercises, structured private family conversations and group support, participants will grow an appreciation of how to reframe their needs for connection to better fit each of the stages they find themselves facing as a family.
